Step into a magical landscape of romantic small towns and beautiful valleys lined by striking mountains. The Kitzbühel Alps have lived on tourism for more than 120 years, so they really know how to look after visitors.
The Kitzbühel Alps in winter: plenty of snow on soft pastures
Compared with the surrounding ranges, the Kitzbühel Alps are among the lower ones, which is why most pistes here are less demanding, with wide slopes. That makes the region a favourite with families with children, though experienced skiers are well served too. The heart of the whole region is the town of Kitzbühel, which gave these Alps their name. Kitzbühel is best known for the downhill World Cup races, which draw famous names here every year. The Kitzbühel Hahnenkamm race is considered the hardest because of the extremely steep Streif piste. You too can enjoy the luxury service of local businesses, or the feared piste itself, or freeriding in deep snow.
The Kitzbühel Alps in summer: there is always something to do
Kitzbühel has plenty to offer in summer. Golf is the sport Kitzbühel is known for: four courses lie right next door and another 30 are not far away. This golfing paradise makes use of varied terrain and rewards players with unique views of the Alpine peaks. In summer the Kitzbühel Alps surround you with the calming green of forests and pastures everywhere, out of which rocky ground emerges higher up. For an easy-going holiday, ride a cable car to the summits. The summer card gives you 36 cable cars and discounts across the region. For unlimited time in the water, head to one of the countless clear lakes (the moorland Schwarzsee is the warmest).
Accommodation in the area
There is accommodation for everyone here, from five-star hotels to Berghütten. For the demanding there are towns such as St. Johann, Wörgl and Kirchberg, or one of the villages, or a place on its own for more quiet.
Typical food in the area
The local food and its specialities mirror the easy-going mood of the mountain landscape perfectly. They include Kaiserschmarrn (shredded sweet pancake with raisins) and Gröstl (pan-fried potatoes with roast meat and a fried egg). For thirst, there is excellent beer from local microbreweries.
