Mölltal

Mölltal: a glacier overhead, a cycle path in the valley

The Mölltal valley lies in Carinthia, below the Hohe Tauern massif. Above it rises the Mölltal glacier, which reaches beyond 3,000 m above sea level.

Mölltal in winter: skiing on the glacier

You reach the top in 8 minutes on an underground funicular. From the top station there is a view of the Grossglockner, Austria's highest mountain, and of many other peaks.

Skiing is on groomed pistes with a discounted ski pass. The glacier is also sought out for freeriding and for cross-country trails.

The lifts to the glacier are usually closed for maintenance from about the middle of May to the middle of June. Summer operation runs from roughly the middle of June to the middle of September.

Mölltal in summer: cycling, gorges and waterfalls

The Grossglockner R8 cycle path runs through the valley. On its easy route you can ride from Heiligenblut all the way to the river Drau.

At its start are the Jungfernsprung-Wasserfall falls. At Flattach, stop at the Raggaschlucht gorge.

In Mallnitz the visitor centre has an interactive exhibition about the Hohe Tauern National Park. You can rest at the Tauernbad Mallnitz baths.

Accommodation in the area

You will find accommodation in Flattach and in the surrounding villages of the valley. Choose from our offer for a winter or a summer stay.

Typical local cuisine

A Carinthian classic is Kärntner Kasnudeln, filled parcels in savoury and sweet versions.

ANKOGEL-MALLNITZ – The longest run in Carinthia and the finest powder in the Tauern

The Ankogel above the village of Mallnitz is one of the highest ski areas in Carinthia. It lies right inside the Hohe Tauern National Park and offers what you will look for in vain elsewhere in Austria: wide, uncrowded slopes, reliable snow and complete peace.

Ankogel in winter: room all to yourself

The gondola takes you in two sections from the valley station in Stappitz (1,287 m) up to the Elschesattel saddle at 2,636 m. Waiting for you are 12.8 km of pistes, most of them red and black, so the area is loved above all by more experienced skiers. Much of the terrain is open slopes above the tree line with natural snow.

The star of the resort is the valley run of around 7 kilometres with a vertical drop of about 1,350 metres, one of the longest runs in Carinthia. It leads from the upper slopes all the way down to the car park at the valley station, so at the end of the day you can literally ski back to your car.

A paradise for freeriders and ski tourers

The Ankogel has an excellent reputation among off-piste lovers. North-facing slopes between 1,300 and 2,636 metres hold the powder for a long time, and 29 ski touring routes are marked in the surrounding area. A classic is the ascent of the Kleiner Ankogel (3,096 m), and tours in the Anlauftal and Knallkar are popular too. The Mallnitz valley also has around 25 km of cross-country trails.

Ankogel in summer: a fast lift into the high mountains

The cable car also runs in summer and is the quickest way from a Carinthian valley up to the main ridge of the Alps. From the top station it is only a few minutes to the Hannoverhaus hut (2,565 m), with views of the glaciers of the Ankogel group, of Austria's highest mountain, the Grossglockner, and as far as the Dolomites.

Twelve waymarked trails start from the three stations. From the middle station (1,945 m) you can walk easily to the Kleiner Tauernsee lake, while the more ambitious can climb to the summit of the Ankogel (3,252 m) – though that is a high-alpine glacier ascent for experienced mountaineers. From the valley station, follow the nature trail to the Schwussnerhütte or walk around the Stappitzer See lake in the beautiful Seebachtal, one of the loveliest high-mountain valleys of the Hohe Tauern.

Mallnitz: a mountain village with the national park on its doorstep

Mallnitz (1,191 m) is an official Hohe Tauern National Park village and a designated mountaineering village. Stop by the BIOS visitor centre or the alpine botanical garden. You can get here without a car, too – Mallnitz-Obervellach is on the Tauern railway, and the car-carrying train through the tunnel under the main ridge has been running since 1920.

Accommodation in the area

In Mallnitz you can choose between hotels, holiday flats, chalets, guesthouses, apartments and a campsite. According to the municipality, all accommodation in Mallnitz is run personally by families.

Mallnitz is a Bergsteigerdorf (mountaineering village) and a member of the Alpine Pearls network, which promotes car-free holidays. The offer also includes an alpine campsite with year-round mobile homes and 95 pitches.

Typical local cuisine

Carinthian cooking is built on simple mountain dishes. Try Kasnudln – large parcels filled with curd cheese, potatoes and mint – or a sweet Reindling with your afternoon coffee.
