Salzburg in summer: fine history and nature in one place

A walk through Salzburg takes you back in time. Discover the charm of the winding lanes of the Old Town and shop under the old gables of the Getreidegasse. In the house where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born you will understand where the composer’s genius lay. In his honour Salzburg holds a world-famous festival of opera and theatre every year. Schloss Mirabell lets you experience the princely life of the Salzburg archbishops, and you will learn still more about them in the unique DomQuartier complex of 5 museums. A cable car then takes you up the Mönchsberg, and from the tower of the medieval Hohensalzburg fortress you can look out over a sea of baroque roofs. Right next to it, the building of the Museum of Modern Art brings you back to the present, holding works by leading Austrian artists of the modern era. And when culture and history have tired you out, take a trip to the local zoo, or uncover the secrets of nature in the modern natural history museum Haus der Natur. A range of entertaining, interactive exhibits awaits you there.

Salzburg in winter: Christmas traditions under snow

Salzburg breathes a magical atmosphere all year round, but in Advent its charm multiplies. The world-famous Christmas markets in front of Schloss Hellbrunn and in the centre of the Old Town carry every visitor into a magical land of Christmas and snow. The Weihnachtsmarkt stands out for its live Christmas music, traditional crafts and the chance to taste the Christmas specialities of the Salzburg region. Families with children in particular will enjoy it: for them, seeing the parade of the alpine devils, the Krampusse, in the first week of December is a breathtaking experience. Let them give you a swipe, so that luck stays with you for the whole of the next year.
