Austria from A to Z: what to find out before you travel

Travelling by car
- Motorway vignette – annual €106.80, two-month €32.00, ten-day €12.80, one-day €9.60 (2026). Motorcycles pay less.
- Section tolls – the Tauerntunnel, Karawankentunnel, Brennerautobahn and others are paid separately.
- Winter tyres – compulsory from 1 November to 15 April in wintry conditions, with a minimum tread depth of 4.0 mm.
- Alcohol – the limit is 0.5 per mille.
Documents and formalities
Austria is a member of the EU and of the Schengen area. Czech citizens travel on a valid identity card or passport. The rules for entry and for travelling with animals are on oesterreich.gv.at.
Where to go
- Nine provinces – from Vorarlberg to Burgenland; each has its own landscape, cuisine and season.
- Mountains – roughly 60% of the country is mountainous, and the highest point is the Grossglockner (3,798 m above sea level).
- Lakes – Wörthersee, Millstätter See, Ossiacher See, Weißensee, Neusiedler See.
- Cities – Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Graz, Linz, Klagenfurt.
When to go
The winter season in the resorts runs roughly from December to April, and longer on the glaciers. The summer season in the mountains begins when the cable cars open, usually in June, and ends in September.
