This page describes the motorway vignettes for 2019. The prices and rules for 2026 are on the page Motorway vignettes 2026.
A toll is payable for using Austrian motorways and expressways, including the urban sections. For vehicles up to a maximum permissible weight of 3.5 t it is paid by buying a vignette and sticking it on the windscreen, or by buying a digital vignette tied to the number plate.
Once it expires, the sticker must be removed from the windscreen.

How to buy a vignette
Outside Austria the stickers are sold at petrol stations near the border and by motoring clubs. In Austria you can buy one from the ÖAMTC and ARBÖ motoring clubs, at tobacconists and at petrol stations. Ask for it by the name “Vignette”.
The digital vignette
ASFINAG introduced the digital vignette in 2018. You buy it in the shop.asfinag.at online shop or in the ASFINAG Unterwegs app. It is tied to the number plate and nothing is stuck on the windscreen; it costs the same as the sticker.
In 2019 a two-month or annual digital vignette bought online became valid no earlier than the 18th day after purchase. The conditions have changed since then – the rules that apply for 2026 are on the page Motorway vignettes 2026.
Driving without a vignette
The substitute toll (Ersatzmaut) was €120 for cars and €65 for motorcycles in 2019. A driver who did not pay the substitute toll then faced an administrative fine.
Vehicles over 3.5 t do not use the vignette; their toll is collected electronically. More information at go-maut.at.
Tolls on selected tunnels and sections
Besides the vignette, some tunnels and mountain sections carry a charge of their own, for example the Tauerntunnel, Karawankentunnel, Brennerautobahn or the Arlberg Schnellstraße. The prices change every year; the rates that apply and a map of the tolled sections are on asfinag.at.
