Along the Radweg R3 cycle trail
Suitable for families with children
The Radweg R3 cycle trail starts in the small town of Kötschach-Mauthen and runs all the way to Villach. The total length of the route is 80 kilometres. This pleasant trail along the river Gail is ideal for families with children. The starting point lies at 700 m above sea level and the finish at 500 m, and those are at the same time the highest and lowest points of the whole route. No significant climbs or descents are waiting for you. Along the way you can also make a number of interesting stops. How about the crystal-clear Pressegger See? In the summer season it is an ideal place to swim, because the water reaches an incredible 28 degrees.
The circuit around the Weissensee
Suitable for strong mountain bikers
The Weissensee lies a short way north of Nassfeld. Experienced mountain bikers can set off here on a fairly demanding lake circuit of more than 30 kilometres, which invites you to climb almost 800 metres. Techendorf makes the ideal start and finish. First you climb 400 vertical metres to a spot with beautiful views over the Weissensee. Then you can climb another 300 metres of ascent towards the mountain hut at Techendorfer Alm. The views are certainly worth it. You continue to the eastern side of the lake, where you find yourself back at the shore. A climb across flowering meadows to the Bodenalm hut follows, and then the route to Paterzipf on the southern side of the lake. From there you return to Techendorf.
Huckepack Radtour
Suitable for recreational mountain bikers
Do you enjoy the views but have less appetite for riding uphill? The Huckepack Radtour will be something for you. Park in Kötschach-Mauthen, take the shuttle bus up to Obertilliach at 1,450 m above sea level and enjoy the easy-going ride of about 35 kilometres back. Ahead of you are 745 vertical metres downhill, undemanding terrain away from the main trails and a route through the picturesque Lesachtal valley. Along the way you can gather your strength at one of the many alpine inns.
Down the Drau valley
Suitable for road cyclists
Road cyclists get their money’s worth in the Nassfeld area too. The route down the Drau valley, for example, is popular. The starting point is Döbriach on the shore of the Millstätter See. From there you ride via Glanz to Fresach, then continue through Feistritz, Pöllan, Nikelsdorf and Zlan towards Spittal an der Drau. You complete the circuit of the Millstätter See via Seeboden and Obermillstatt and back to Döbriach. This route is around 70 kilometres long and the total ascent is 1,135 metres. Do not forget to pack your swimsuit: the Millstätter See is pleasant for swimming. More popular road routes can be found around the Dobratsch mountain range or in the area around Villach.
