The best experiences just across the border!
Wondering where to head for good skiing? Do not hesitate: make for Austria. There are few places with better conditions, and not only because of the wonderful alpine peaks that lie literally next door to us. The long tradition of skiing in Austria plays its part too, matched by the excellent quality of the ski facilities and of every service here. They simply know what a skier needs, and they know how to deliver it.
A skiing paradise within reach
The first piste in Austria opened more than 110 years ago, and the country has some 22 thousand kilometres of groomed routes in hundreds of ski areas. They boast the most modern lift and cable car equipment, along with an endless choice of specially discounted ski passes. You will not come across much artificial snow here; natural snow of the very best quality is taken for granted instead, which is why the skiing in the mountain areas is reliably excellent.
In the glacier resorts you get that luck for most of the year. Austria has 25 skiable glaciers in total, and the ones that will captivate you most are the Tyrolean Stubai with its perfect facilities, the Salzburg Kitzsteinhorn with its stunning views, and the Carinthian Mölltal, lying in the shadow of the majestic Grossglockner. Glaciers are also the ideal place for untamed powder freeriding, as they will confirm in Fieberbrunn near Kitzbühel or in Vorarlberg’s Montafon, which ends at the Silvretta glacier.
You will take first-class experiences home from the ordinary mountain resorts as well. The Carinthian Nassfeld stands out for its scale and its excellent facilities, not to mention its perfectly groomed pistes. You will ride pistes like those in Brixental near Kitzbühel too, or in Zell am See-Kaprun in Salzburg, which is among other things a paradise for freestyle and for families with children.
Children are of course catered for in every resort, always with a wide choice of ski schools and easy-going slopes. Quite exceptional in this respect, though, are the areas in Brixental and in the Tyrolean Serfauss Fiss Ladis, which will delight your offspring with wonderfully entertaining slopes full of attractions and plenty of things to discover.
Not keen on downhill and would rather run on your skis? In that case too you will fall in love with Austria. The cross-country skiing trails here are perfectly groomed, long and varied. See for yourself in the Carinthian Heiligenblut at an altitude of a thousand metres, or in the Tyrolean Hochfilzen, a celebrated biathlon paradise. Along the way you come across plenty of cosy huts where you can taste the best of Austrian cooking. It will accompany you anywhere else in the mountains too, and thanks to it your holiday will be truly perfect.
