There is one thing you will enjoy in Austria as much as skiing, proper cycling.
The landscape here is made for bikes, and it does not matter whether they are trekking, road or mountain bikes. From the endless choice of first-class cycle routes of every type and difficulty everyone will find something in Austria, and you will be looked after excellently here too.
A cycling Eldorado for young and old
Austrian cycle routes stand out for their length, their variety and their perfectly thought-out signposting. They lead you through mountain valleys, past numerous lakes and historic towns, along asphalt roads into the hills and up to the Alpine summits themselves, from which you can drop back down nice and fast.
The dense network of routes is matched by excellent facilities that the locals take care over; everywhere you come across cosy pubs and huts, and accommodation allows for bike storage, and you can also hire a bike at one of the many local rental shops. Not to mention the ubiquitous information centres, bike repair shops and charging stations for the ever more popular e-bikes.
With children, set off along the easy nature cycle route around Neusiedler See or Bodensee, in whose clear waters you can cool off nicely after the ride. You can also swim to your heart’s content on the leisure cycle route through the Salzkammergut, which boasts several lakes along the way as well as appealing towns, led by the spa town of Bad Ischl and world-famous Hallstatt.
Ride towards culture and history on the flat Tauern Cycle Path, which leads you along the foot of the Hohe Tauern all the way to Salzburg. Or set off along the azure-blue Danube through the Wachau valley and past Melk Abbey, onwards along the Danube Cycle Path all the way to Vienna itself.
More nature and more asphalt are offered by the Enns Cycle Path in Styria, where the peaks of the Schladminger Tauern will keep you company. You can make the ride easier with an e-bike, or simply push on and let your thighs work at full power. You will set the right road pace above all on the hairpins of the famous high-alpine Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, from which you should turn off to the Franz-Josefs-Höhe viewpoint - the view of the highest mountain in Austria is definitely worth the stop.
You will enjoy amazing panoramas of the Austrian Alps from your bike saddle very often. For instance when a summer cable car carries you up and you set off along a trail between the high peaks, comfortably on an e-bike, or a bit more adventurously down a trail on a mountain bike. In Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang you can taste exactly such singletrails and freeride runs, as well as the renowned challenges of the local Bikepark.
Great downhill runs through beautiful scenery await you in Schladming-Dachstein too, or in the Zell am See-Kaprun area, where climbs into the hills alternate with long descents through pure mountain terrain. In the picturesque Salzkammergut you can make short one-day rides in search of high-alpine adrenaline and alternate them with rest in the lake waters or over a glass of beer in traditional inns. Simply enjoy Austria to the full with all your senses.
