Attersee in winter: cross-country skiing, small lifts and ice skating
Attersee is not a ski resort. For the Attersee-Attergau area the regional tourist board lists three small pistes, suited mainly to children and to practising technique.
In Attersee am Attersee itself there is the Skilift Kronberg: 1 lift, 1 magic carpet, 1 km of intermediate piste, floodlighting and 3 snow cannons. It is 3 km from the St. Georgen motorway exit.
Cross-country skiing is the stronger side of winter here. The network at St. Georgen im Attergau covers 30 km in three loops. Between Nußdorf and Oberwang run the 5 km Moor Loipe and Kapellen Loipe trails. The region also lists tobogganing, ice skating and curling.
A perfect destination for a summer holiday in Austria
Lake Attersee lies in the popular Austrian region of the Salzkammergut. In summer it offers excellent conditions for swimming and diving, and also for cycling trips and hiking in the immediate area.
Clear water invites you to dive and watch the freshwater world
This glacial lake covers 46.7 km2 and has crystal-clear water. No wonder that diving is one of the favourite activities at Attersee. In places the lake reaches a depth of 170 metres, and visibility under the surface is 25 metres.
Besides many species of fish, you can watch the piles that the traditional fishermen's houses stand on. Several diving centres operate around the lake, where you can hire equipment and arrange lessons with an instructor. If the view from above the water is enough for you, swim and relax on one of the maintained beaches at Attersee, or take a trip boat out on the lake.
After the swim, time for culture
Lake Attersee is not only about swimming and diving; lovers of culture will find something here too. What is there to see at Attersee? Visit the Gustav Klimt Centre in Schörfling. Attersee and Klimt belong inseparably together: the famous Art Nouveau painter spent every summer here between 1900 and 1916 and created a large part of his landscape paintings here. In the village of Steinbach am Attersee, the composer Gustav Mahler wrote music.
Accommodation at Attersee: campsite or a private room?
Around the lake you will find a number of picturesque small towns to stay in. The largest of them are Attersee and Kammer. The wide choice of Pensionen, hotels and apartments suits everyone. Perfectly equipped campsites right on the shore of the lake are an excellent choice.
Fine food at Attersee: taste the fresh fish
Close to the lake it is hardly a surprise that the local specialities are freshwater fish. And where else should you taste them than in the place where you can be sure they are fresh. A typical one is "Bachsaibling", baked brook char.
