The Fuschlsee region lies in the Austrian province of Salzburg. It is named after the crystal-coloured lake, and you will fall in love with it for the views of the untouched countryside here.

The Fuschlsee area offers a wide range of accommodation. The most popular are the Sheraton Fuschlsee-Salzburg Hotel Jagdhof on one side of the lake and the Waldhof am See on the other. Lovers of luxury can stay right by the water in the five-star Schloss Fuschl. Adventurers who prefer a campsite can pitch their tents at one of the neighbouring lakes –  Mondsee or Irrsee; there is no campsite on the Fuschlsee itself.  The food of the Salzburg region is served in restaurants right on the lakeshore. You can try fresh fish, cheese Nocken or meat in batter with cabbage.

Fuschlsee in summer:

The best time to visit is without doubt summer. A huge beach, emerald-clear water and a wide range of water sports – what more could you ask for! In the summer months the water reaches 24 °C. If you want to see the lake and the countryside around it from another angle, take a boat trip. Active visitors can test their fitness on one of the treks in the Fuschlsee area. The popular circular hiking route runs around the whole lake and measures just under 12 km. It suits the whole family and is usually walkable all year round.

Tip: in August the Fuschlsee hosts an event called the Fuschlsee crossing. It is a swimming discipline, and the aim is to swim across the whole of the Fuschlsee.

Fuschlsee in winter:

Although the Fuschlsee area suits a summer holiday better, you can stay here and travel out to the ski slopes. The Gaissau Hintersee ski resort, for example, is only about 30 minutes away by car.

Accommodation in the area

The Fuschlsee region is made up of six municipalities: Ebenau, Faistenau, Fuschl am See, Hintersee, Hof bei Salzburg and Koppl. You can stay in hotels, Pensionen and holiday apartments.

A category of its own is a farm holiday between the lakes Fuschlsee and Hintersee. There are campsites at the Hintersee, and mountain huts across the region. Note: the Salzkammergut SommerCard is bought here, it is not included in your stay; it is valid from 1 May to 31 October.

Local food and drink

The main fish of the Fuschlsee is the Reinanke. Char, lake trout and pike are caught in numbers too, and perch, carp and tench end up in the nets. The lake is 4.2 km long, 800 m wide at its widest point and up to 66 m deep.

The Schloss-Fischerei on the lakeshore sells fresh and smoked fish, and its hot-smoked fish is known beyond the country’s borders. The fish is processed straight away and sold fresh; the rest is smoked the next day.

Other specialities the region names are Kaiserschmarrn with plum Röster and apple purée from the Waldhof Alm, Hollerschmankerl from the Holleralmen and Kletzenbrot at the Advent markets.
